Hello All! 🌞
Summer is here, and it's the perfect time to give your home a refreshing, breezy update. One of the simplest and most impactful ways to do this is by adding a few gorgeous, coordinating pillows. Not only are they an easy swap, but they also bring color, texture, and style to any room in a snap. Let’s dive into how you can create a fabulous summer look with just three pillows!
1. Choose a Theme
First things first, pick a theme that screams summer to you. Whether it’s coastal vibes, tropical prints, or bright florals, having a theme will guide your choices and make everything look cohesive. Spoonflower is amazing with the HUGE variety of designs...and most you won't find at a fabric store... so if you're into fabrics you're friends won't have - that's the place!
2. Pick Your Pillows
Now, let’s talk pillows! The key is to select three that coordinate well together without being too matchy-matchy. Here’s a foolproof way to do it:
- Anchor Pillow: Start with a bold, statement pillow that sets the tone. Think big florals, a striking geometric pattern, or a vibrant tropical print. This pillow is your star.
- Complementary Pillow: Next, choose a pillow that complements your anchor pillow. It should pick up a color or motif from the star but in a subtler way. This could be a smaller print, a solid color with texture, or a simple stripe.
- Accent Pillow: Finally, add an accent pillow that adds a touch of something extra. This might be a different texture like a woven or embroidered design, or a metallic or velvet finish that adds a bit of luxury.
Always check out whole collections...then you're sure to coordinate beautifully.
3. Placement is Key
Where you place your pillows can change the whole vibe of the room. Here are a few tips:
- Living Room: Arrange your pillows on the sofa with the anchor pillow in the center and the complementary and accent pillows on either side. You can also add them to an armchair or even a bench for extra flair. I like to add a lumbar pillow on a chair, to tie the whole room together...why should the sofa be the only star!
- Bedroom: Layer your pillows on the bed. Start with the anchor pillow in front of the sleeping pillows, followed by the complementary pillow, and finish with the accent pillow in front.
If you're not into the rows and rows of pillows look on you bed...a really simple and clean look is the single long pillow:

(this is called the "extra long lumbar pillow")
- Outdoor Spaces: Don’t forget about your front porch, patio or balcony! Adding pillows to your outdoor furniture can create a cozy, inviting space. Just make sure they’re weather-resistant!

When it comes to front porches, my I want to be able to see a fresh, vibrant entryway with bright pillows and flowers that my neighbors can see from the street...I'm not subtle in the summer time!
4. Play with Texture and Color
Summer is all about light, bright, and airy feels. Opt for fabrics like linen, cotton, or a soft woven texture. As for colors, go bold! Think sunny yellows, ocean blues, fresh greens, and pops of coral. Mixing different textures and colors will add depth and interest to your space.
5. Don’t Forget the Details
Little touches can make a big difference. Consider adding a throw blanket that picks up a color from your pillows or some summery accessories like fresh flowers, a stylish tray, or some cute candles.
I think coordinating coasters would be adorable too!
And there you have it! With just three coordinating pillows, you can totally refresh any room and bring those delightful summer vibes indoors. Time to get styling and enjoy your beautiful new space!
Happy decorating!
